Effectiveness Of Locks

When it comes to the effectiveness of locks, the effectiveness is going to be based on the intended use of the lock, to start. Whether or not a lock is efficient depends on what you need it for and if it is meeting that need. We are going to assume, for the purpose of this article, that the reader is interested in locks for security, rather than for privacy within a property.

We are going to start with doorknob locks. These of course are important for any exterior door at a property, whether at your home or business. This type of lock is going to entail a turning lever on the inside, and on the outside, a keyed lock cylinder. The mechanism for this lock stops the knob from retracting the latch. How effective is this lock by itself? The answer might surprise you. On its own, it is not too difficult to manipulate. If a person wanted to, they might manipulate or break this type of lock with relative ease. So what are you supposed to do to make it more effective? We recommend pairing it with a deadbolt.

There are different types of locks, as you can see here. There are certain types of locks made to assist with security, for different properties. Since we mentioned deadbolts, we are going to discuss them a bit here and their effectiveness. This is a common type of lock often used for homes. How does it work? The metal bolt extends into the doorframe from the door when a person turns the lock. These are beneficia but if you opt for a double cylinder deadbolt, you might want to consider that this has the power to slow down a person attempting to exit the property. When combined with a doorknob lock, this adds effectiveness.

There are cam locks, lever handle locks, knobs, mortise locks, padlocks, DIN cylinders or euro profile cylinders, deadbolts and more. Their effectiveness depends on how you are going to use them. A furniture lock is not going to be effective when used incorrectly but if it is being used on a cabinet or drawer it might assist in preventing unwanted access. Is the door lock being used to make the door more accessible? Then you might want to consider how a lever handle lock is going to offer efficiency. The point is that if a lock is being used for the purpose of stopping access versus making access easier for certain persons, that is going to impact the perceived effectiveness.

When you want more security, consider a deadbolt. When you want to make your property more accessible, consider lever handle locks.
